90 Day Fiance: the Other Way Brittany and Yazan

TLC has recently been in the news for reportedly firing Babygirl Lisa Hamme from 90 Day Fiancé following her controversial use of racial slurs. The latest star to create controversy for the franchise is 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way season 2’s Brittany Banks. The 26-year-old Floridian took to Instagram where she called out Americans asking them to “get educated” in a now-deleted post.

Brittany Banks and Yazan Abo Horira were introduced on the latest season of the show where their relationship seemed to have started off amidst fears of cultural expectations and divorce proceedings. Floridian Brittany, who’s an aspiring rapper met mechanical engineer Yazan, 26 after seeing him on a video call with his sister, who lives upstairs from her family in Chicago. The two hit it off instantly and Brittany landed in Jordan to get engaged to Yazan following distance relationship. While she was still married to her ex, Yazan came from a conservative Muslim family that would have preferred to have him married to someone local and from his community. Amidst these problems and Brittany’s reluctance to convert her faith even after marriage, she still made a permanent move to Amman, Jordan for marriage.

On stepping foot in the airport, Brittany hugged a crew member and was seen carrying a bottle of alcohol in her luggage which irked Yazan off. It resulted in a misunderstanding where Yazan, agitatedly asked her to respect him and his culture to which Brittany replied with, “You act like my ex, you’re so controlling. None of my culture is respected, you guys expect me to respect and accept your culture.” Brittany admitted that the quarrel caused her to have second thoughts about her move as she had left a lot behind, including her career. Meanwhile, Brittany’s decision was also met with criticism on social media by the 90 Day Fiancé audience.

As reported by The Blast, the TLC reality star recently took to her Instagram account to call out these fans that had criticised her decision to move to a completely new country for her man. On a since-deleted post she wrote, “Let’s talk about the loud and wrong crew. The ones who told me to do research they hadn’t done themselves.” This seems to be a reference to the fact that in Jordan, as specified by Yazan on the show, “Physical touch is wrong. Drinking alcohol is wrong.” The audience suggested that Brittany should have known about this prior to her big move.

It’s either this or they emulate what they see on TV. This, she thinks makes them assume they’ve done the research themselves when they haven’t, and end up saying what fits their agenda. Read her full caption below:

So, after traveling extensively I found out Americans are severely undereducated. We are 37th in the world for math and science, which means a lot of us aren’t doing research.” She also added that she feels Americans believe intelligence comes with citizenship… Continuously making gross general assumptions that threaten & violate people’s individual integrity. Only 42% of American have a passport far behind other modernized countries. Clearly, Americans need to travel more or see more people’s experiences traveling. Surprise I didn’t do the show for clout. I did it because some Americans need to watch 90dayfiance and get educated. Plus this is a time for inclusion. TLC has been ahead of the ball in having poc represented in their network. If you don’t believe out of trillions of people(I can’t believe I have to put in parenthesis that I said trillions to sarcastically exaggerate for the idiots who will point this out for virtual cookies) in the world someone like me and someone like Yazan would never hook up you clearly live in a box. Get out more try new things! We only have ONE life to live, how do you know what you like if you don’t try it! Say what you want but I go out in the field and do my research because I’m not scary I got heart.

The post ended up getting severe backlash making her delete it, as speculated due to fears of termination from the show. However, earlier today, the reality star thanked her fans for supporting her during the ongoing fiasco. She wrote, “Truly appreciate the genuine love and support,” she shared on her Instagram stories. She also put up a story thanking local Jordanians for having her back, as many people from the country have come to her defence via comments and DMs to “let the watchers know how westernized Jordan really is when people tell me I should’ve done my research.

Certain fans have also been expressing concerns over the portrayal of Arab countries on the TLC show. They have explained that Jordan is actually rather progressive and open-minded when compared to other countries, with a user even commenting, “I know it’s the editing and makes good T.V. – Just remember, there is more than meets the eye.” On the other hand, Brittany had also previously deleted an Instagram post where she alleged that Yazan not only drinks (his favourite drink being Jack Daniels) but, also smokes hashish, takes Tramadol (a pain reliever), and lies to women while noting that he has been cheating on her, and was currently on his third woman. This post faced angry comments as well, and she later claimed that she had been “hacked or whatever.” While the cultural differences always loomed over the 90 Day Fiancé couple Brittany-Yazan’s relationship like a dark cloud, the outbursts on social media have escalated the topic to a whole level altogether. It’s not surprising that viewers are expecting the couple to have already gone kaput even before watching what more drama unfolds on the show.
