Rajiv Gandhi Case Convict Nalini 'Threatened To Kill Herself': Official

This past year, Nalini Sriharan was granted parole for per month on her behalf daughter’s wedding.

Nalini Sriharan, serving a full life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, night after being accused of harassing another convict threatened to kill herself in prison last, a high Tamil Nadu official said on Tuesday.

“It had been similar to blackmail or perhaps a threat. She didn’t attempt suicide,” Sunil Kumar Singh, the principle of the Tamil Nadu Prisons Department, told NDTV.

The incident occurred at the Vellore Women’s prison, where Nalini, 55, has been jailed for many years.

“Nalini threatened to kill herself once the jail was inquiring right into a harassment complaint. Another life convict has alleged that Nalini harasses her and really wants to be shifted to a new cell. Nalini threatened to commit suicide if the girl was shifted,” Mr Singh said.

But Nalini’s lawyer P Pugalenthi was quoted by news agency ANI as saying that she tried to kill herself following a fight with a jail official.

The lawyer, alleging torture by jail officials, appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to set up Nalini’s transfer to some other prison.

The lawyer said he was told that the fight started over a complaint by another convict against Nalini, a version he doubted. “At 8: 30 pm, the jailer visited Nalini’s cell and enquired concerning the complaint. Through the inquiry, a quarrel occurred between your Nalini and jailer. She got upset and attemptedto commit suicide,” Mr Pugalenthi told ANI.

“This is actually the view of the authorities. However, we don’t think this. She’s served the final 30 years in prison rather than attemptedto take such steps. This is simply not believable. I believe the jail officials had tortured her,” he said, calling for an inquiry.

Claiming that Nalini’s life is in peril, the lawyer said he previously requested jail authorities and Chief Minister E Palanisamy to the transfer her to Chennai Puzhal prison.

Nalini and six other folks were sentenced alive in jail for the 1991 assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by way of a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
